Philippine Typhoon Sunk Sulpicio Lines Ferry, 700 people missing

Written on June 22, 2008 – 12:33 pm | by Dimla

Typhoon Fengshen (International Name) or Frank (Philippine Name) sunk a ferry loading an estimated number 700 passengers. Rescue teams reached the scene of the disaster, where the ship’s bow could be seen poking above the waves, but their efforts were hampered by high winds and heavy seas. “They haven’t seen anyone. They’re scouring the area,” said coast guard spokesman Arman Balilo. The ship sailed during the rough weather condition. And President Gloria Arroyo upbraided coast-guard officials on live radio. “Why did you allow it to sail and why was there no ample warning?” she demanded. “I want answers.” The local coast guards said that the ship sailed to seek shelter in inland water in Sibuyan Island but the ferry had engine trouble and stopped. The rescuers scoured the sea but only 4 passengers were found in the shore, they were all dead.
